Wrong Script
The press and Liverpool fans have their script written in this episode of the English Premier League. Fernando Morientes is to star in this episode title “Exorcising the Red Devils”, barely 24 hours after he was unveiled in Anfield. Everything went according to plan as the Reds kicked-off to a frantic pace, making their intentions known with Luis Garcia inches away from connecting with a Wes Brown flick across the face of his own goal. There was no lack of adrenaline pumping action, as attacking football took centre-stage. It was still unknown as to who would draw first blood. The visitors however, had other ideas. With each passing minute, Sir Alex Ferguson got his grip onto the Director’s chair and rewrote the entire script. United’s water-tight defence saw two or three players closing in on Morientes each time he received the ball. This former Real Madrid star displayed flashes of brilliance with his exquisite touches. But Sir Alex is fixed on halting Liverpool’s passing game, and who is better than the Scot himself to show the Spaniard the physical side of the English game?
Wayne Rooney landed in the lead role, with Reds’ custodian Jerzy Dudek as his co-star, 20 minutes after the start of the show. Against the run of play, the England striker unleashed a shot from 30 yards out. It should have been bread and butter for Dudek, but the keeper dived over and saw the ball hit the back of the net. Anfield was stunned. United was buoyant. The Reds now have an uphill task of making the Devils surrender their parts.
Liverpool continued to knock in vain on the doors of United’s defence. The visitors were simply refused to relinquish their roles – they were having too much fun, and United went on to clinch the third consecutive victory in Anfield. As for the former Real Madrid star, it would take some time before he get used to the physical English game. Perhaps then, his skills and techniques honed in Spain can be rubbed off onto his English counterparts in Liverpool. And maybe, they will arrive in Old Trafford with the right script next season.
