Emerging from the gardens, I crossed Clarendon St and walked east into George St. Standing on 199-209 George St is the Hepburn Terrace – a showcase of Victorian homes that define inner Melbourne.

Through this long and tiring walk, I saw some of Melbourne’s oldest houses such as the Braemar that was dated way back to 1865, and was nearly demolished in the 1970s.

Over at the corner of George and Powlett streets stood four apartments which were formerly a grand house. Built and extended from 1860s to 1930s, it was home to the first Jewish Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Sir Benjamin Benjamin in the 1880s.

The two neighbouring homes at Powlett St, Foynes and Eastcourt have masses of iron lacework, and they dated back to the 1880s. They were a sharp contrast to the Art Deco flats built in 1930.
