Cooks’ Cottage

According to the brochure, the cottage was originally built in the English village of Great Ayton by James and Grace, the parents of the great captain. Into the stone lintel above the entrance, was the initials JGC, and 1755, the year the cottage was constructed.

The cottage is furnished with both original and reproduction items. The man-made and metal implements reflected the kitchens of that time, which made up the main room downstairs. Climbing up the stairs brought me into the main bedroom and living room, filled up with the hooded oak cradle, lamps and candles.

History has it that Sir Russell Grimwade of Melbourne bought the Cooks’ Cottage in 1933. He had it dismantled brick by brick and shipped them over to Victoria where it was re-assembled on its present site in 1934.
