The City’s Green Lung
Situated in the heart of the City’s hustle and bustle, Fort Canning Park has become a green refuge for the city-dwellers, who want to take a breather and escape into the arms of Mother Nature.
Century-old trees spread their branches, casting some deep pool of shades and one can’t help but stop beneath these majestic trees for some cool respite. Close your eyes and take a deep breath in. Soon, your imagination will wander to places that you’ve never been to. Take a look around you. The magnificent fig tree could be beckoning to you, as the Saga, silk-cotton Tree and Yellow Flame stand watch. But if you think you are the only one shying from the sun, look up for a revelation. The Bird’s Nest Fern and other epiphytic denizens too, are protected from the sun by the shady crown of the Rain Tree.
The chirping of birds can be heard as you enter within the vicinity. Catch the flashes of yellow as Yellow-vented Bulbuls flutter past. Fighting for your attention will be the Collared Kingfishers and Copper-smith Barbets as they dart from tree to tree, adding colour to the greenery. Somewhere among these shades of green, are the ruins of ancient brick buildings, which reveal the rich historical vein of Fort Canning. And if these age-old trees can speak, think of what stories they will reveal…
